In den Jahren 1869 - 1870 veröffentlichte Jules Verne unter dem französischen Originaltitel Vingt mille lieues sous les mers, den Roman Zwanzigtausend Meilen unter dem Meer. Darin veröffentlicht der französische Professor Pierre Aronnax einen Erlebnisbericht über die Geheimnisse der Meerestiefen. Eine Hauptperson des Romans ist der mysteriöse Kapitän Nemo, der - seiner Zeit weit voraus - über Unterseeboote zu berichten weiß, den aber offenbar ein tragisches Schicksal umgibt.
