1804 folgt Sophie Mereau (1770-1806) ihrem jungen Ehemann Clemens Brentano nach Heidelberg. Sie ist acht Jahre älter als er und schreibt mit großem Erfolg Gedichte und Romane. Ihre erste Ehe ist geschieden. Brentano träumt davon, gemeinsam mit ihr eine poetische Existenz als Vater vieler Kinder zu leben. Obwohl Sophie in dichter Folge drei Kinder zur Welt bringt, wächst die kleine Familie nicht. Nur der Freundeskreis um Sophie und Clemens vergrößert sich stetig. Sophie versucht, den Ansprüchen ihres ziellos umtriebigen Mannes gerecht zu werden. Der Heidelberger Freundeskreis wird Zeuge mancher Krise in dieser Ehe. Schließlich kommt es zur Katastrophe.-
