"Das achtzehnte Jahrhundert" wurde 1977 als Mitteilungsblatt gegründet und seit 1987 zur wissenschaftlichen Zeitschrift der deutschen Dixhuitièmisten ausgebaut. Die interdisziplinär profilierte Halbjahrsschrift versteht sich als Angebot an alle Wissenschaftler, die auf den verschiedenen Feldern der Forschung zum 18. Jahrhundert tätig sind. "Das achtzehnte Jahrhundert" veröffentlicht Aufsätze, Forschungs- und Fortschrittsberichte, Sammelbesprechungen und Einzelrezensionen sowie bibliographische Berichte zu wesentlichen Bereichen der 18. Jahrhundert-Forschung. Thematisch gebundene Hefte, die sich auf einen Schwerpunkt konzentrieren (bisher z. B.: Recht, Frauen, Französische Revolution, Popularphilosophie, Spätaufklärung, Enzyklopädien, Abenteuer und Abenteurer, Akademien, Deutsch-dänischer Kulturtransfer, Deutsch-schweizerischer Kulturtransfer), sowie offene Hefte, die die laufende Forschung zum 18. Jahrhundert in ihrer Vielfalt dokumentieren, wechseln einander in freier Folge ab. Ältere Jahrgänge dieser Zeitschrift sind als Reprint bei Schmidt Periodicals erhältlich.
