Das Heptamérone wurde von Königin Margarete von Navarra nach dem Vorbild des Decamerone von Giovanni Boccacio als Rahmenerzählung gestaltet, die an 10 Tagen erzählt werden sollten. Von den geplanten 100 Novellen konnte die Königin 72 kurze Erzählungen fertigstellen. Das Heptamérone wurde lange aufgrund der teilweise doch recht derben Geschichten als sittenloses Machwerk abgetan. Heute zählen die Novellen als Zeitbild von hoher literarischer Qualität zur Weltliteratur.
