Seit 10 Jahren versieht der Bahnwärter Thiel seinen Dienst im Wärterhäuschen eines brandenburgischen Dorfes. Nachdem seine Frau Minna stirbt, bleibt Thiel mit seinem kleinen Sohn Tobias allein zurück. Um für das Kind ein besseres familiäres Umfeld zu schaffen, heiratet er die frühere Bäuerin Lene. Doch sein Wunsch nach Harmonie bleibt unerfüllt: Lene misshandelt seinen Sohn Tobias, vor allem nach der Geburt ihres eigenen Kindes. Der phlegmatische Thiel ist emotional zu sehr von Lene abhängig, um sich ernsthaft gegen ihr Fehlverhalten zu wehren. Die Spannungen zwischen den beiden nehmen immer weiter zu.
