Introduction
The Stadium of Success
We are huddled in the packed stadium of life, watching with child-like jubilation as it rushes before us. Sometimes we are in the stands cheering others on, getting super-excited for them. At other times we are nervous, we grimace and hurt when they lag behind, become injured or stop running because they are exhausted. At some moments, we find ourselves running on the track too, at other times we are on the side-lines. Sometimes we are in training -- we know quite well the preparation aches and pains as our muscles, tendons, bodies and minds are stretched. Then it’s time for us to run our own race on the field of life. We are bombarded by the possibilities of victory at the end of the race -- the trophy and medals of triumph, numerous congratulations and whatever else comes with that.
At other times we are timid and fearful about even starting a race. We fear the snickers and mocking of our family, friends and people who don’t even know us. We are haunted by the numerous ‘what-ifs?’ We fear confirming our worst fears; we fear seeing dejected stares, shaking heads and jeers of our on-lookers if we are not as successful as we had hoped to be.
Isn’t it true however, that even when we do fail… there are still those who hold our hands, those who pat our backs, those people who give an encouraging nod and smile and say it’s ok … try again
. Isn’t it true that you know a couple of people who have your back and are always in your corner?
I can see you nodding and smiling now… I can hear you saying Yes! It’s true, yes…it’s true!
And that’s simply an amazing reality! Amidst the exhilarating dynamics we encounter in the real world of athletics – Life is really kind to us despite the setbacks. Unlike a real race where only one person gets first (1st) place, the golden trophy or top medals; the race of life is kinder. Thankfully, in the race of life, everyone runs their individual race and can win it. Now isn’t that just good news?
I think that is absolutely great news! Life is kind, despite the training, aches, pains, sacrifice, hurdles, cheering or jeering. No matter how awful you think your life may be or might have been, won’t you agree that you have had some victories and successful memories along the way?
Perhaps you are still not where you truly aspire to be in life… perhaps you drag yourself reluctantly out of bed each day? Perhaps life itself has left you startled or just knocked the vim, vigor and vitality out of you? Perhaps you are working two or three jobs but you are still struggling to make ends meet?
Perhaps you are in school and can never seem able to truly ‘Ace it’… perhaps you feel as if your communication skills and interpersonal relationships are just
