Eine Frau und ihre Mutter brechen in die ehemaligen Siedlungsgebiete der Donauschwaben nach Nordserbien auf, um die Wurzeln ihrer Familie zu suchen. Am Telefon mit dabei: die alte Großmutter. Vor der Abreise hat sie ihrer Enkelin vom Alltag in ihrer Heimat, vom 2. Weltkrieg und der Deportation in ein sowjetisches Arbeitslager erzählt. Im Auto hören sie sich diese Aufnahme an. Nach anfänglichem Widerstand beginnt auch die Mutter über den Krieg und die Flucht zu sprechen. Ihre Tochter reiht Stück für Stück aneinander und findet allmählich eine Spur in die Vergangenheit.
