With 19 years of broadcast news production experience, numerous documentary projects to her credit and an unparalleled commitment to film and storytelling excellence, movie-maker producer, videographer and certified editor Deeana Johnson now brings her creative talents to the world of publishing, with the creation of the new hit short-story series, “Breaking News The Series.”
“I am a storyteller, and a strong woman of color without an agenda,” says Johnson. “My passion for writing began while growing up in the picturesque environment of Miami, Florida; a melting-pot community of differing cultures simmering with rich and diverse tales. I take pride in writing real stories of real people that are rarely told or seen.”
With the development of “Breaking News The Series,” Johnson draws on years of first-hand experience surviving of the always exciting, sometimes disturbing and often treacherous pit of office-politics which unfolds inside many modern-day newsrooms; a pit which can consume even the most thick-skinned ambitious young journalist.
“I got in this business to share stories through my visual storytelling,” Johnson said. “Who would have thought that the journalists who report the stories are sometimes much more interesting than their subjects? You have to be of a certain mind set to live day in – day out showcasing the flaws of the world, yet still maintain a sense of humor. That’s why ‘Breaking News’ was created: to show it’s not all horror and inhumanity, but there is a lighter side to this life.”
Johnson takes readers far behind-the-scenes; past the camera lens of what nightly-news viewers witness, into an emotionally and sexually charged, scandalous, back-stabbing, tragic and sometimes comedic roller-coaster ride through the amusement park known as local TV News! “Breaking News The Series” shines a bright light on the “anything goes” unbelievable world orbiting inside newsrooms.
That Johnson is now turning her talents to edge-of-your-seat stories, filled with characters easy to love [or hate] and plot twists almost too unbelievable to be based on real events and people, is no surprise. Tales of real people facing the trials and tribulations of life, family, love and loss were strong influences for Johnson growing up.
“Television stories from my childhood have had a huge influence on my writing,” explains Johnson. “For every “Good Times” and “The Jeffersons” episode, there was a “The Brady Bunch” and “Little House on the Prairie.” These were well written/character driven shows; with heart wrenching, laugh-out-loud conflicts. Yet they always culminated into satisfying conclusions that made the viewers believe in something bigger and care enough to return for more. ‘Breaking News The Series’ with its full and engaging cast of news reporters, anchors and producers all struggling to find their place and make their marks, has the same effect. Readers are compelled to keep turning the pages; delving deeper into the dysfunctional hallways, edit-booths and on-air studios television news viewers never see.
