Before entering the ministry, Alta had a varied background, not only in religion but in law and insurance as well. She served as deputy clerk for circuit, sessions, criminal, juvenile and probate courts in both Bradley and McMinn counties. Named “Outstanding Young Woman of the Year” for McMinn County in 1974, Alta was included in Personalities of the South, honoring her many civic and professional contributions. For twenty-two years, she was a licensed insurance agent and executive vice president of Blackwood Insurance Agency in Maryville, Tennessee. A certified lay speaker for three years before her call into full-time ministry, she enjoyed speaking in many Methodist pulpits, drawing from each a sense of “being in the right place doing the right thing. It just felt good!”view less
