Dr. Myers is the Director of the Marital Therapy Clinic at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, BC and Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of British Columbia Faculty ...view moreDr. Myers is the Director of the Marital Therapy Clinic at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, BC and Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine. He graduated in medicine from the University of Western Ontario in 1966 and did residencies at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, Wayne State University (Detroit General Hospital), and the University of British Columbia. Since completing his residency training in 1973, he has taught half-time and been in private practice half-time. He is board certified in Psychiatry by both the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada and the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology.
Dr. Myers is the author of six books: Touched by Suicide: Hope and Healing After Loss (with Carla Fine) (Gotham Books/Penguin, 2006); The Handbook of Physician Health (with Larry Goldman, MD and Leah Dickstein, MD) (American Medical Association, Chicago, 2000); Intimate Relationships in Medical School: How to Make Them Work (Sage Publications, Thousand Oaks CA, 2000); How’s Your Marriage? A Book for Men and Women(American Psychiatric Publishing Inc., Washington, DC, 1998); Doctors’ Marriages: A Look at the Problems and Their Solutions (Second Edition, Plenum, New York, 1994); Men and Divorce (Guilford, New York, 1989). His publications also include over 100 articles, book chapters, and book reviews and 8 videotapes covering a range of topics: marital therapy, men and reproductive technology, divorce, health concerns of medical students, psychiatric illness in physicians and their loved ones, boundary crossing in the doctor-patient relationship, suicide, sexual assault of women and men, AIDS, the stigma of illness, and gender issues in training and medical practice.
At this time, Dr. Myers serves on the Board of Directors of the Robert E. Jones Foundation (a benevolent society for families of ill physicians) of the American Psychiatric Association and the Editorial Board of American Psychiatric Publishing Inc. He is on the Editorial Board of the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry and The Journal of Men's Studies. From 1997-2000, he served on the Board of Trustees of the American Psychiatric Association and from 2000-2001 he was President of the Canadian Psychiatric Association.
Dr. Myers is a specialist in physician health. He is the founder and co-chair of the Section on Physician Health of the Canadian Psychiatric Association and serves on the Advisory Board of the Center on Physician Health of the Canadian Medical Association. With the support of the Committee on Physician Health, Illness, and Impairment of the American Psychiatric Association (of which he is a member), he has produced an educational videotape for medical students, physicians, and their families called “Physicians Living With Depression” (American Psychiatric Publishing, Inc., Washington, DC, 1996). His videotape “When Physicians Die By Suicide: Reflections of Those They Leave Behind” won the 1999 APA Psychiatric Services Award. For his advocacy efforts, Dr. Myers received the 2002 CAIR (Canadian Association of Interns and Residents) Resident Well-Being Award.
Dr. Myers lectures widely throughout North America and Europe on these subjects.
Carla Fine is the author of the widely acclaimed book, No Time to Say Goodbye: Surviving the Suicide of a Loved One published by Broadway Books/Doubleday in 1999. The book, now in its eighth printing, is also available in Japanese from Fuso Publishers and in Malayalam (Kerala, India) from The Mathrubhumi Printing and Publishing Co. Ltd.
No Time to Say Goodbye is a personal story--Ms. Fine's husband, a prominent New York physician, killed himself in 1989 at the age of 43. She also interviewed more than 60 other people who lost sons and daughters, wives and husbands, fathers and mothers, sisters and brothers, friends and relatives to suicide. The book describes the different stages of mourning surrounding the suicide of a loved one and helps survivors see that they are not alone in their confusion and grief.
Carla's new book, Touched By Suicide: Hope and Healing After Loss, written with Dr. Michael Myers, one of the leading clinicians in the field of suicide and professor of pyschiatry at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, was published by Gotham Books/Penguin in September 2006. The book offers detailed steps, practical suggestions, and compassionate guidance for coping after suicide.
Carla lectures extensively to suicide survivors' groups and professional organizations throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and India. She also offers workshops on writing as a path to healing.
Carla is the author or coauthor of seven other books, including Who Cares What You're Supposed to Do? Breaking the Rules to Get What You Want in Love, Life, and Work (Perigee/Penguin, 2004), written with Dr. Victoria Dickerson; Achievement Matters: Getting Your Child the Best Education Possible (Kensington Press, 2002), in collaboration with Hugh Price, president of the National Urban League; Strong, Smart, And Bold: Empowering Girls For Life (Cliff Street Books/HarperCollins, 2001); and The Miracles of Mentoring: How to Encourage and Lead Future Generation, in collaboration with Thomas Dortch, Jr., president of the 100 Black Men of America (Doubleday, 2000).
She is also the author of Just Because I'm Latin Doesn't Mean I Mambo: A Success Guide for Hispanic Americans, in collaboration with diversity specialist Juan Roberto Job (Ballantine Books, 1998); Married to Medicine: An Intimate Portrait of Doctors' Wives (Atheneum, 1981); and Barron's Guide to Foreign Medical Schools: Selecting Them, Surviving Them, and Successfully Practicing in the United States (Barron's Educational Series, 1979).
Carla has appeared on numerous national and local television and radio programs, including Oprah Winfrey, Court TV, Joan Rivers, Fox TV News, Oxygen TV, New York One, Phil Donahue, NewsCenter 4, and Tony Brown's Journal. She received her Masters of Science degree with honors from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
